The Nature of a Degree
The precise components of a degree planning program will differ for each student, based upon such issues as the nature of the associate degree and each individual’s preference of concentration. My understanding of the nature of an associate’s degree is to give a person an opportunity to complete introductory level courses, which will be required no matter what their academic future contains.
The nature of a major concentration commonly determines the specific title of the bachelor’s degree in which an individual will be working towards. Therefore, a bachelor degree is somewhat specific in nature to the type of career and industry a student will pursue.
In my opinion, the “nature” is regarding the building breadth of perspective through the general education requirements and offer adequate specialization to meet professional and career requirements for a chosen field.
Consequently, there are many courses that I feel are necessary to be included in all degree plans. In the world we live today, full of technological advances, Computer courses should be a component of a degree; as well as, English, Art, Math, Foreign Language, Economics and History.
Liberal Arts or Skills
In my opinion, there is a contradiction of the two viewpoints regarding the definitions of skills and competency of a graduate. Individuals in a classroom setting are educated in skills for example, effective communication but, seldom confronted on the application of the concepts. It does appear that a college graduate might require more cross disciplinary knowledge and an advanced set of communication, critical thinking and analytical skills in which to apply the information to real world problems and situations. It is not enough to simply have professors educate on the concepts; but, the students must be able to distinguish the proper instances to apply the knowledge. As a graduate, there are instances that soft skills might not be covered in depth in a curriculum creating a lack of skills.
Introduction and Goals Segment of the Rationale Essay
Life experiences have brought me back to Empire State College after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management and Economics many months ago. On a personal note, I was in a relationship with a female to male transgender who had top and bottom surgeries while we were together. He legally became a man and we married, and then divorced. During the end of what I thought was the lowest point, turned out to be the opposite. I have written a novel regarding my life with a woman born in the wrong body.
I have selected a bachelor degree in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing given that it complements my professional goals and desires presenting me with a broader awareness of my potential in the future. When I was seven years old I had a drawing of a Dalmatian published in a local paper, when I was fifteen I had my poetry published in a magazine, when I was thirty I was selling my original acrylic paintings in art shows and now at forty five I have written a novel. The arts have been a theme through out my life.
I believe that my bachelor’s in business prepared me for leadership positions because of the knowledge, analytical, and critical thinking capabilities developed in that curriculum. In studying writing, I will take those lessons learned and explore the resources of my imagination, sharpen my critical and verbal skills, and develop my professional attitude. My goal is to broaden my knowledge about writing. It is with the educational motivation that I am focusing on realizing my intellectual interests within this field. Individuals who specialize in the field of writing are required to possess the ability to analyze and understand the basics of writing whether it be poetry, plays, non-fiction or personal narrative. This curriculum will enhance my employability in the field I have chosen incorporating current and future professional expectations while incorporating such courses as: Communicating through the new media, Digital story telling and Literary interpretation as a method of inquiry.
Upon graduation I will have increased my marketability with a Cultural Studies degree with a concentration in Writing from a highly regarded, progressive institution. This program will help me accomplish my professional goals in utilizing the written word.
Breadth and/or Depth in the Degree
My understanding of a proper degree structure entails the unique blend of academic and vocational courses that will satisfy the requirements for completion of a bachelor’s degree. This concept is crucial to a degree design as I apply the theory to my own program. Each course I take through Empire State College will become a stepping stone as I progress to my personal and professional goals. Literary Interpretation as a Method of Inquiry, a course touching on theories; Visual Literacy: Advanced, an advanced class in understanding the media; and The Development of Gender Identity, a reflection on the meaning of gender. In this course it will be possible to have a specialized project within this course so I may be able to utilize my manuscript as part of the coursework. The combination of these strategically placed dominos will integrate the concepts of progression and true breadth of learning as well as depth that are essential to a degree in writing.
The SUNY General Education Requirements for Writing are essential for me to meet given that I matriculated after January 1, 2004 and transferred with a total of 68 credits from Baruch College and LaGuardia Community College. It is necessary to have 45 advanced level credits, of which 24 credits must be in the concentration, for an effective program. It is in my opinion, additional credits higher than 24 would be needed to substantiate using a title of Writing. It is through personal experience that I have come to this conclusion after receiving my BS in business. The higher the advanced standing credits a degree program incorporates the more it demonstrates depth, diversity and progression towards my degree. I have chosen courses that address these different areas. It is apparent that having a bachelor degree concentration will clearly move my academic awareness from lower to intermediate to advanced-level studies. Therefore, there should be a higher number of advanced level credits in general learning for a more rounded education within a field. I have 34 advanced level credits within my degree plan.
Academic Expectations Segment of the Rationale Essay
This rationale essay of Academic Expectations consists of comparing three different colleges throughout the United States. Each university had a set of standard prerequisites and advanced level courses for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Writing. These college courses were correspondingly similar to Empire State College. The colleges I examined for a concentration in Writing were John Hopkins University, Ithaca College, and Buffalo State College.
John Hopkins University provided detailed information regarding courses necessary for their degree planning. This college separates their courses as Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced. The advanced division of courses which were necessary to be completed for writing concentrations are: Readings in Fiction: Contemporary American Fiction, Advanced Fiction, Writing about Science and Non-Fiction Workshops, Fiction Workshops and Poetry Workshops.
Whereas, the intermediate and lower separations of classes to be completed were: Writing about Science, Readings in Fiction: Narrative Design, Intermediate Non-Fiction: Science and Society, Intermediate Fiction: Modernist Stories, Introduction to Dramatic Writing: Film and Introduction to Nonfiction: Matters of Fact. The general studies essential for this curriculum were listed as: Introduction to History of Modern Philosophy, History of Science and Technology, Foreign Language.
Ithaca College had a very informative catalog concerning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Writing. This university has a duel program. It required a major and a minor. This curriculum was broken down into two categories for the necessary completion of courses by a student. They were referred to as the Writing Core-Major and General Study courses. The basic writing core courses as part of the curriculum were: Self and the Scholarly Essay, Feature Writing, Fiction Writing II, Poetry Writing, Writing as a Critic, Creative Writing, Writing the Short Novel, Writing as a Naturalist, Writing from Cultural Experience, Proposal and Grant Writing and Introduction to the Essay. It was essential to complete the general education courses: Business Statistics, Foundations of Western Civilization, Foreign Language, Academic Writing I for Humanities and Sciences, , Persuasive Argument, Theories of Comedy and Tragedy, Gender Studies: Feminist Social Theory and Images of Women in Western Art.
Buffalo State College mandates two divisions of writing. The first is called the Intellectual Foundations Requirement and the second is entitled Credits in English; both must be completed for this degree. The major courses are: Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation, The Craft of Writing, Composition and Rhetorical Theory, Creative Writing: Narrative, Writing for Television and Film Arts, Journalistic Writing, Creative Nonfiction, Visual Communication, Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry, Writing for the Professions, Journalistic Writing, Nature Writing, Autobiography/Memoir, The Personal Essay, Public Relations Writing, Writing about the Arts, Ensemble Theater and Creative Writing: Narrative.
Reviewing several colleges has given me the insight that I am preparing a logical progression towards my degree in Cultural Studies. This degree plan will guide me through examining subject matters in terms of cultural practices and connection to power as well as analyzing the social context in which culture manifests itself. Within the major of Cultural Studies, my courses will be a combination of societal studies as well as the different aspects of literature such as research, interpretation and analyzing. In addition, I have the opportunity to customize my major towards my degree. My curriculum is carefully structured to accomplish the goal of receiving a BA from Empire State College. I will have received instruction in a variety of writing and general courses to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the field.
An example of progression in my curriculum is through the basic foundation of Composition I, The Short Story, Literature of the City and Urban Study: Creative Writing. With the knowledge of interpretation, analyzing and research these classes led me to more advanced levels, Public Policy, Images of Women in Western Civilization and The Development of Gender Identity.
The courses remaining to be completed towards my major in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing are: Communication Decisions, Speech Writing, Stories and Creative Leadership, Creative Nonfiction: Advanced, Proposal writing, Digital Storytelling, Visual Literacy: Advanced, Communication Through New Media, Woman, Girls and the Media, The American Cinema and The Development of Gender Identity.
In conclusion, after researching different college programs I came across some differences regarding the need of additional courses and titles of classes offered for a Bachelor of Arts in Writing degree compared to Empire State College. With the degree program I have chosen, I will be able to study the nature of human beings, their theoretical and artistic expressions within the writings of diverse cultures. My program is based on culture, social structure and the written word. This will enable me to develop my skills in analyzing, interpretation, conceptual vocabularies and the critical/logical thought process. Therefore, I am in compliance with the Area of Study expectations for the foundation of Cultural Studies.
Professional Expectations Segment of the Rationale Essay
In order to be a productive professional in today’s working environment an individual is expected to posses a range of general skills including a high quality writing ability and the capability to filter information acknowledged from certain topics. Communication is crucial in any specialized field as well as computer skills and research capabilities. Therefore, a competent person must be able to work with constant change because the field chosen in today’s challenging workforce is continuously transforming. Professionals in the field of writing are required to possess the knowledge to develop content using any number of multimedia formats and with today’s technological advances there are various ways to communicate the written word. Employers today are looking for qualified individuals with a Bachelor’s degree and background experience in writing. Undergraduates who are preparing for a higher educational program are expected to prepare for graduate work in this profession with a curriculum which incorporates coursework in composition and professional writing. Courses which will prepare students for the advanced levels are Woman, Girls and the Media, The American Cinema, Literacy: Advanced, Proposal writing and Digital Storytelling.
Particular college courses are utilized by professionals currently working in the field of writing and have found them helpful to their career development. These individuals have benefited from all course work yet; the usefulness of the combination of the media and communication strengthens ones fundamental knowledge of the writing world. These areas of comprehension increase the understanding of the nature of concepts and theories in today’s writing environment while applying the theoretical approaches to a multitude of practical problems expected to be encountered in the functional areas of writing.
Predominant areas of writing in the future that professionals need to focus on are editorializing, freelancing and journalism. Subsequently, these functions are likely to change the expectations of the writing world. A multitude of factors will change the practice of writing such as diversity in our world and the progression in computers and equipment.
I reviewed the local Florida newspaper The Herald Tribune as a source of research for positions that are available for degreed individuals with a concentration in writing. Salary levels depend on the geographic locations of an organization and the type of business. Therefore, a salary can range from for example; entry level technical writer I of $32,000 and an individual can have the potential of becoming a technical writer IV salaried at $86,000. My professional goal is to acquire a position that is challenging as well as rewarding in the field of writing.

Degree Structure and Design Segment of the Rationale Essay
The overall purpose of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing is to enhance my knowledge in critical thinking strategies as well as learning values within a social context. The program I have created is a progression of courses combining social theory, communication, literature and technology. I will study effective oral/written communications, expressive awareness of ethical principles to obtain a better understanding of accessing and utilizing today’s information technologies.
An academic cultural and writing program promotes the idea that writing improves learning. I have designed my program which includes the connections made between academic writing classes and the LGBT community as well as the learning the process of writing different types of documents such as memos, speeches, proposals and abstracts. My concentration is considered a conventional academic discipline, Writing. The organizational framework is called Professional/Vocational which incorporates knowledge and skills needed for writing regarding our society in areas such as professional writing, communication and the media. The structure for this program combines cultural examinations and the many different ways to communicate. It will provide an analytical core with a focus on visual literacy, gender identity and interpretation.
I have designed my Cultural Studies degree to incorporate sociology, history, English, film and literature to recognize ways in which human beings communicate and relate to their conditions. I have utilized and met The Areas of Study guidelines and feel they have helped me to plan my degree program with little restrictions meeting my personal interests and goals. Through these guidelines I will meet the standard requirements that will permit me to study the area of Cultural Studies and Writing.

I plan on completing the following courses to fulfill the guidelines for Culture as a Lived Experience and Philosophical Expression. The foundation was set when I took Public policy and learned a variety of public policy issues, such as busing, educational finance, the women’s movement, civil rights, crime, abortion, are examined from different theoretical perspectives. Attention was also given to comparable issues arising in other nations. The information obtained in this course helped me to attain a better understanding of the course Images of Women in Western Civilization an advanced level depth learning that educated me on the history of women’s contributions to the development of Western civilization. I was encouraged to identify and analyze significant events, societies, people and ideas contributing to world attitudes. The knowledge I gained led me to the study of The Development of Gender Identity. Through this course I will reflect on the differences of gender perspectives through history while examining gender concepts across current cultures. It is designed to study the personal meaning of gender, bridging from the biological structures that determine our sexuality. In taking this course, I will be able to sharpen my novel and take it to the next level. Artistic Expression can be fulfilled through Urban Study: Creative Writing which allowed me to write about and explore how social and cultural processes shape cities and how urbanization itself reshaped the socio-cultural development. This class opened the door for Creative Nonfiction: Advanced that will define the genre and present all the basic elements of creative nonfiction, including structure, voice, tone, writing in scenes and using background information and descriptions. In order to develop my awareness of the media arts I will enroll in Visual Literacy: Advanced which will educate me in the area of visual expression and communication using theories and applications. This class will help me understand the theory of the role of the media, integrating digital media tools with core academic content and developing my own high quality visualization formats for specific problems in which to analyze. In Digital Storytelling a course that examines both the theory, history and practice of digital storytelling. I will learn about the future of narrative in a digital world for storytelling and educational applications in history, geography, science and language arts. Within our complex world of technology, art has found its place. Within Principles of Visual Art: 2 Dimensional I was introduced to the elements and concepts of two-dimensional design. Familiarity with the terminology, concepts and basic materials utilized in the studio by visual artists will be explored. An understanding of two dimensional design included drawing and painting to photography.
Education about Social and Cultural Norms and Belief Systems is crucial to be able to understand the inner workings of our society today. Courses that deal with different cultures are Women, Girls and the Media examining areas of race, ethnic issues, class issues, disability and sexuality. The focus will be on American culture and the global needs of women. Through this course I will be able to obtain a stronger understanding of the meaning of gender leading to Sex and Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective: Advanced. It examined how different cultures define femininity and masculinity while learning why they exist as well as doing a comparative study of gender and sexuality. Another course which fulfills this requirement
is Elementary Spanish II in which all of my language skills were practiced; listening, speaking, reading and writing in a foreign language.
To meet the Modes of Communication guidelines I have chosen courses such as Communication Decisions where I will acquire knowledge and understanding of basic rhetorical and communication theories for interpersonal groups, organizational and societal contact. Speech Writing where the focus is on reading and critiquing a wide range of speeches including my own resulting in five ceremonial speeches: acceptance, apologia, commencement, dedication and eulogy. This study will help me obtain a better understanding of Creative Nonfiction: Advanced, Proposal Writing a course on reading and analyzing sample proposals and build on basic communication theory to create my own short and long proposals. Stories and Creative Leadership will teach me how to explore the universal story structure known as “The Hero’s Journey” and will examine how stories can help in understanding and assess the work of leaders through leaders. Communication Thru New Media, The American Cinema which is an in depth course on film from a cultural, social and artistic perspective that will examine film techniques while utilizing its vocabulary. I will research Hollywood as an institution within diverse time frames and the impact film as an art, has on society. These courses are part of the collective grouping of studies that will introduce me to reading and writing analytically through various forms of communication. Perspectives on Gender, Class and Race, are key elements that are crucial for a cultural studies degree. To fulfill this requirement, the courses I have in place are Sex and Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective: Advanced which exposed me to drawing primarily on anthropological and ethnographic studies from a broad range of cultures and how roles were shaped. The course explored the variations in the sexual divisions. I have taken Spanish II, a continuation of Spanish I. It was designed to learn all aspects of the language, reading, writing, listening and speaking, all stemming from this culture. The next requirement being met is Critical Reading, Interpretations and Writing. These skills are utilized in various professions and are essential to the study of cultural studies. Courses such as The Short Story, Proposal Writing, Stories and Creative Leadership and Literary Interpretation as a Method of Inquiry give me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge in the areas focused on. The Short Story had five objectives, studying an outline of the origins, characteristics, themes, symbols, and content common used in a short story genre. The compactness of the short story as a literary genre provided an opportunity to emphasize the structure and literary elements of fiction. The abundance of stories and the repetition of the process of analysis gave me the opportunity to refine my analytical and interpretive skills. In Proposal Writing I will be expected to write short, academic research proposals and longer, formal, work or community related proposals. The knowledge obtained from this course will guide me in a better understanding of the meaning of articulation. Stories and Creative Leadership also incorporated the study of skillful creation and articulation of stories which is a fundamental part of a leader’s vocation.
The Communication in Speech and Writing guidelines will be fulfilled through such courses as Oral Communication which gave me instruction on effective oral communication through readings, lectures and discussions. It emphasized speaking and listening as a principal and integral means of learning. Speech Writing where I will create think pieces designed to discuss speeches, concepts and their underlying principles which led me to Proposal Writing and the studying of how to strengthen my analytical, writing and research skills. Conceptual Vocabularies, Knowledge of Sources, and Critical Skills guidelines will be met by incorporating the course Composition I and learning how to become a skilled reader of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writer who can compose for a variety of purposes.
My Writing concentration is based on short story, composition, literature, research and oral communication. The courses I will be taking will create opportunities for educational learning of the workplace as well as the reflection on economic, social and cultural issues. It provides a framework for personal and professional growth and it is the groundwork which will prepare me for any field related to writing. This will increase my awareness of literary studies, composition and the media. The courses I have chosen will demonstrate meeting the requirements for the Areas of Study. My major overlaps and provides both depth and breadth learning experiences in the field of Cultural Studies beyond the academic advanced level courses and ensures an intensive exposure to critical aspects of the field that reflect current key trends in various cultures.
I became intrigued by the theory and practice of writing with an emphasis on the many faceted tools used within the media. These courses will introduce me to the concepts of artistic creation, fundamentals of communication and speech writing. The combination of these areas will sharpen my skills and consciousness concerning mass media, visual expression and the creative process. It became a natural progression for me to pursue an academic emphasis in writing due to life’s experiences and my educational background in literature. I have an appreciation for one primary genre, Gay/Lesbian. One book that I found profound was The Laramie Project by Moses Kaufman. It told of a culture, a time when a small town was torn by a gay man’s death. I too want to make society aware of the trials and tribulations of being gay or lesbian. Through my own personal experiences I have written a novel with the theme of transgenderism and lesbianism and have taken Elementary Spanish II which was a continuation of learning basic grammatical concepts and vocabulary useful in a foreign language. Theory – Sex and Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective: Advanced explored the theory of gender and sexuality and examined male and female roles within society; Literature of the City helped me develop critical approaches to literary works regarding thinking and rhetoric and a course called Writing Thru Literature gave me the opportunity to study various literary styles and genres through a historical perspective. The Development of Gender Identity is a course that will help me to reflect on the differences of gender perspectives through history while examining gender concepts across current cultures; Creative Nonfiction: Advanced expressing my inner thoughts through writing about today’s real world.

I plan on completing the following courses to fulfill the guidelines for a concentration in Writing. I will expand my understanding of many different aspects of the Literature of Different Periods. Literary Interpretation as a Method of Inquiry in which I will learn of different cultures and periods, analyze readings and study theories which will increase my skills in interpretation as this course touches on many time periods through literature from the 1800’s to today. Images of Woman in Western Civilization an advanced level depth learning that educated me on the history of women’s contributions to the development of Western civilization through different time periods and aspects of culture as well as the development of civilization. It enhanced my knowledge of many aspects of culture and the development of civilization. Writing Thru Literature was a course in which I learned how to explore fundamental issues, such as how we read and understand literature, and larger issues, such as how reading matters to our understanding of identity, meaning, and value. The course drew upon texts from a wide range of historical and cultural backgrounds. Another course, Literature of the City examined various cultures within cities of different time periods as well as portraying Literature in the Historical/Literary Context. My readings will be a collection of different genres and ranges from Peter Hoeg’s Smilla’s Sense of Snow suspense novel to Duong Thu Houng’s Novel Without a Name, a poetic and universal story of real people, war, horror, death and coming to grips with life.
In understanding Authors of Different Canons, I studied the course Literary Interpretation as a Method of Inquiry as it represented ethnocentric values which were antagonistic to diversity in many literary works. In the course Creative Nonfiction: Advanced, I will be given the opportunity to explore my inner thoughts through writing about today’s real world. Images of Women in Western Civilization a course that explored Elizabeth Wayland Barber’s Women’s Work and the portrayal of the history of women through a twenty thousand year span. The course Writing Thru Literature explored James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in which the novel was examined from the perspective of life in Dublin at the turn of the century, including education, history, commerce, and social customs. Critical Approaches to Literature’s guideline will be fulfilled by two additional courses, Creative Nonfiction: Advanced Stories and Creative Leadership. Through these classes I will be introduced to novels and plays in which to apply critical thinking while exploring the various fictional locations.
The SUNY General Education Requirements which are mandated by NYS Education Department have included the necessity to incorporate breadth within my degree program. For an individual pursuing a bachelor’s degree, as part of the conditions of graduation, a student must complete a general education program of no fewer than 30 credit hours specifically designed to achieve the student learning outcomes. These components are grouped into 10 knowledge and skills areas and two competency areas.
I am matriculating after the Fall 2000, and there will be specified components in place pertaining to my degree which will contribute to a broadening of my educational background. I have transferred a total of 68 credits from Baruch College and LaGuardia Community College. It is necessary to have 45 advanced level credits for an effective program to demonstrate depth, diversity and progression towards my degree. I have chosen courses that address these different areas. It is apparent that having a bachelor degree concentration will clearly move my academic awareness from lower to intermediate to advanced level studies.
My degree is designed to develop my expertise in writing, analyzing and researching of different genres. Foundational and introductory courses provided the education to improve my skills and knowledge in literary practice and theory through classes such as Composition 1, The Short Story, Urban Study: Creative leading me to the advanced level classes such as: Speechwriting and Proposal Writing. It is through these courses that I will begin to make the connection with the Cultural Studies aspect of my program. Courses such as, The American Cinema, Women, Girls and the Media and Images of Women in Western Civilization are incorporated to learn of the multi cultural aspects of society.
Professionally speaking, my degree in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing is supported by a solid conceptual grounding in the writing disciplines and will assist me in the development of competencies to become a highly effective individual.
In conclusion, attending Baruch College and completing my bachelor degree with Empire State College will be extremely beneficial in continuing my professional goals. I am prepared as an individual to move forward in today’s multifaceted and increasingly changing writing world with the guidance of Empire State College.
